Mota has given up at least two runs in four of his last six appearances, as his earned-run average has risen from 3.16 to 4.78 over that span. The 37- year-old right-hander has appeared in 51 games this year, the sixth straight season he has eclipsed 50 appearances.

The move also opens a roster spot for outfielder Cody Ross, who the Giants acquired off waivers from the Florida Marlins.
